What is Oldham Fruit Route?
The Oldham Fruit Route is a community-oriented green initiative set up by Oldham Council, with the aim of maintaining and highlighting the natural fruits available along a specific route through Oldham, starting just outside of the centre.
What did the project involve?
The project required a number of separate elements:
- a small website to explain picking, growing seasons and other juicy information
- An illustrated map to be used both digitally, and printed on a series of physical metal location signs across the route.
- Small wayfinder sign.
- Fruit Illustrations to show what fruit was on offer along the route.
The bulk of this project was Illustration work, with a map and a series of attractive fruit illustrations being required to convey the offering of the fruit route itself. These were created from scratch, using Adobe Illustrator, with support from other packages.
After an extensive research period and trialling a few different styles, we settled on the fruits you see below – each representing a fruit that is available on the Oldham Fruit Route walk. (In order: Blueberry, Plum, Damson, Cherry, Apple, Pear, Raspberry, Blackberry)
The map itself was fantastic to work on – helping locals find their way through the various natural offerings that they may otherwise miss out on in the daily routine.
With a large number of locations on the list, a number of sign designs were created, each with its own information on the fruits available at that location.
